Are Drum Clamps Safe?

Posted on 27/07/2015

For some years we've sold drum clamps, often called belly grabs as a low cost way of lifting steel drums safely when using a fork truck.   We still believe these are entirely safe if used with traditional oil drums but we recently had reports from a customer to say that one we had supplied was now dropping drums.
We arranged for the attachment to be returned together with one of the offending drums.  The reason for failure soon became apparent.  It was being used with a new, lighter drum made with thinner gauge steel and less pronounced rolling rings.
It worked safely and efficiently with traditional steel drums.
As a result we have decided to stop selling the drum clamp with immediate effect.  We are therefore recommending the rim grip unit for all drum types when using a fork truck.
